Populus deltoides/Herbaceous (Great Plains cottonwood/herbaceous) Community Type

This site illustrates the effect of high long-term livestock grazing pressures. The understory has been completely converted from shrub dominance to herb donimance. The cottonwood overstory has been severely thinned. This site is along the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River northeast of Winifred, Montana (elevation is approximately 697 m; 2,300 ft).
