Abies lasiocarpa/Oplopanax horridum (subalpine fir/devil's club) Habitat Type

Incidental at mid elevations in northwest Montana. Occupies wet bottoms near streams, springs, or seeps where the water table is near the soil surface all year. Climax stands co-dominated by Abies lasiocarpa (subalpine fir) and Picea (spruce). Diagnostic understory species is Oplopanax horridum (devil's club). This site is a draw southwest of Swan Lake, Montana (elevation is approximately 1,372 m; 4,500 ft).
