Carex rostrata (beaked sedge) Habitat Type, Deschampsia despitosa (tufted hairgrass) phase

Carex rostrata (beaked sedge) habitat type is an excellent stabilizer of streambanks with its extensive root system. The dense mat of sedges filters out sediments thereby developing and enhancing streambanks. This site is along the Gallatin River just outside the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park (elevation is approximately 2,073 m; 6,800 ft).
