Populus deltoides/Cornus stolonifera (Great Plains cottonwood/red-osier dogwood) Community Type

The understory is dominated by a wide variety of shrubs including Cornus stolonifera (red-osier dogwood), Prunus virginiana (common chokecherry), and Rosa woodsii (woods rose). At center is a pole-size Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash) indicating successional status and direction of the stand. This site is on the Tongue River southwest of Miles City, Montana (elevation is approximately 894 m; 2,950 ft).
