Populus deltoides/ Herbaceous (Great Plains cottonwood/herbaceous) Community Type
The exposed soil surface is the result of ice jam flooding that can deposit 1-2 m (3-6 feet) of sediment in one event. Notice that the cottonwoods all lean downstream and the bases of the trees are buried by sediments. The site is along the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River northeast of Winifred, Montana (elevation is approximately 727 m; 2,400 ft).
