Populus trichocarpa/Cornus stolonifera (black cottonwood/red-osier dogwood) Community Type

Fall colors assist in understanding succession along a river. The yellow colored trees are Populus trichocarpa (black cottonwood), the red is Cornus stolonifera (red-osier dogwood) and the dark green in the extreme right is conifer trees--the climax vegetation for the site. This site is along the Blackfoot River west of Lincoln, Montana (elevation is approximately 1,333 m; 4,400 ft).
